Of Mice and Men:Motifs

The men of mice and men sometimes did not know there own strengths, some did not even know their own weaknesses. This one character named Lennie is probably the main character who has this problem. Lennie's strength makes him do really outrageous things. Lennie's weakness lets people take advantage of him etc... Lennie is a big guy but he has a disablity that seems as if it controls his head you will soon find out.

Lennie having a disability and being big often plays a role in his actions. Well the first thing I will talk about is when Lennie was not able to control his own strength. Lennie loved little animals and when slim would let him stay and play with the puppy he would pet it and play with it as if it was his own. One day he did not know his own strength and he started petting the puppy he petted it to hard and he killed it! He then knew he did a bad thing and he tried to hide it. That showed how he does not know his own strength.

Lennie's disability often lets people take advantage of him. A couple of people knew that such as George and Curley's wife. If you read the book your probably saying George! George knew he could tell Lennie what to do, and how to do it and he would listen. No matter what, what ever George said went. Curley's wife also knew that Lennie had a disability every time she had a question or needed someone to talk to she went after Lennie, she knew Lennie was not smart enough to turn away from her trap and she kept trying to use it to her advantage.

As I said Lennie often does not know his own strength or weaknesses. At times he lets people take advantage of him and at time he does things he cant even explain. Lennie is a big guy with a different type of way of handling things.

May 8th reflection

At this meeting we really got nothing accomplished but looking at the pictures from the week before. We emailed some guy about a recycling bin. Next week we need to find out what is the main goals of beautifying the school and talk about waiting for the garden until next year it is to late now.

May 1st Reflection

On this day my group went outside to the Constitution Center. Where we examined the grass and looked for places to do our garden. We were all assigned our roles in the group. I was given the role as the facilitator. Some good things about this meeting was that everyone was usually on task, looking for spots. Brianna actually examined the soil a little. It was great that we went outside, we got many idea's by just looking. Somethings we need to do is start buying things and getting prices because we are going to need that so next year we can start fresh. Our goal for next week should be getting prices and finalizing our idea's.

Of Mice and Men:Themes

“Stay away from her Lennie, she aint nothing but trouble”. “Why does no one ever talk to me”? Promiscuous, lonely, wrapped around Curley’s finger, and is given no name. Curley’s wife is a miss-interpreted character in the book of mice and men. She always seems to want attention, the only one on the farm who wears a dress and high heels, hair always done, but is that all apart of her game. Curley’s wife is a human predator in her own way. She is a human predator towards three main characters, Lennie, George and Curley.

Big, Okie, and mentally ill all describes one character in the book, Lennie. When the Curley’s wife was first introduced to the book and movie she attacked Lennie and George. Lennie was told by George to stay away from Curley’s wife because she was not anything but trouble. Well one day she seen Lennie over there with George all scared up, but before then she must have seen her husband’s hand. She asked Lennie what happened then she followed up by saying she knew. Since then she started coming after Lennie, not in a promiscuous way but in a way to get back at her husband. Then later on she noticed Lennie was slow she some how brain washed him into talking to her because she was lonely. She described him as a little baby, she then convinced him to touch her hair but then he killed her!

Smart, care keeper, and a hard worker; well this describes one character by the name of George. He’s the guy responsible for Lennie, he got him a job, tells him what and whatnot to do. As the author and producer of the book and movie made her seem as if Curley’s wife wanted George for sexual reasons. He was the first person she came at. Looking at him and talking to him in a promiscuous, way, as if she wanted to do some things to him. He never responded to her or fell in her trap. She never got close to getting him. She made it seem like she just wanted to talk but her actions described differently!

Getting married to someone you don’t like is not the best thing. Curley’s wife married Curley. Curley is a low self-esteem type o guy he hates big people because he wants to be big. Well Curley’s wife does not like him so she tries to find out anything or do anything to get t him. She tried to kick him. She tried to figure out did Lennie really do that to Curley’s hand all to get at her husband. Curley loves her but she does not love him. He messed up her dream!

To conclude this I will like to say Curley’s wife was a predator in her own way towards different people. She knows Lennie is slow so she use him to socialize with, George is handsome so she wants to seduce him and she just dislikes her husband.

Service Learning reflection for April 25th

On April 25th my service learning group really is starting to act more maturely. Successes that was made was behavior was better than weeks before. We walked around the school to see how we could beautify it. We all came up with some good idea's too. Only problem that needs to be fixed is we need to know who is in what group or are we just automatic in both. We need to get prices for things we want now so next year we will know. The role in the group I signed up for is the facilatator.

Reflection on Service Learning

On Friday 4/11/08, we had service leaning in our school. Three good things that happen on Friday was that we got idea's on beautifying the school such as maybe a student lounge etc... We heard Khayree's idea on where to put the garden (outside of the Constitution Center. We also heard Mrs. Thompson's idea on waiting until next year in September. Some things we should work on is prices of what we want and see what is actually possible and what is not. We should work on making 4 groups which is 4 different groups to find prices, places, design, and what ever else.

Charles Chapter Analysis

Chapter # 1 Wake up BIGGER

As this book took part in the tough times of the south side of Chicago during the 1930's were many blacks weren't being as equal as the white man. So the middle of the night everyone is sleep and tired so an alarm clock goes off and a voice goes off in a bad tone saying '' Bigger shut that off please I'm still trying to get some sleep''. So Bigger shut it off as he quickly made his way to the bathroom as got in the shower getting his self clean as he got out the bathroom and put his clothes and quickly is making his way to the kitchen and turn on the lights and sees a rat and does everything to try kill it but finally Bigger gets it and kills it and leaves the house to hang out.

Chapter # 2 Plan Something

This take place in a alley way where bigger is setting and waiting for friends so they can talk about how can find a way to get to the movies. So they can earn money so they can go to movies and they need it fast. So his friends arrive but it is only one bad thing is that G.H doesn't want to go though it because he thought they get caught and go to jail and he didn't want to go though with that type of thing. But Bigger kept getting angry with because he thinking that G.H wasn't going to do it for them to get the money. So G.H was all for it so he can earn money to get in the movie so they can chip in to get the movies. They all did an they were all there way to the movies. In the movies Bigger and jack are sitting together and they were masterbating to a part they saw that they like.

Chapter #3 Straight to the pool hall

As they all leave the movies they wanted to go and play some pool for some time and they all did. But mostly the two that was winning was Bigger and jack because they was so good at the game and they played at each so many times. And mostly the one that came out with the most wins was Bigger because he was so good at the game pool and won so much money. After they all left the pool hall they went to a party that was far away to go but they did. After the party Bigger went home with a girl name Mary that drunk just like him. They go in the house and up in her and trying make a move that he wants but she doesn't let him a voice is speaks saying '' mary'' but Bigger puts his hands over her mouth so she can't say a thing to let her know that she was home. A few minutes later she stops breathing and Mary is dead. After that Bigger got out the house quickly and ran as fast as he could so the cops wouldn't catch him.

blooms taxonomy questions

Knowledge:

What happened after Mary and Bigger left the house?

After leaving the house, Mary tells Bigger about her other plans. Her plans was to meet up with her lover, Jan Ertone. Mary, Jan, and Bigger go to eat, while out Bigger becomes uneasy about being out with two white people. After awhile he calms down and decides to eat with them. Then they drink a little rum and decide to leave.

Comprehension:

Can you provide what happens, between Mary and Bigger later that night?

Later that night Bigger drove Mary to the Dalton’s home. Arriving there, Mary was to drunk to go into the house by herself. So a nervous Bigger, decides he will take to her bedroom. While in her bedroom, Bigger becomes a little horny and starts proceeding in sexual acts on her, until Mrs. Dalton enters the room. When she entered the Bigger became still like a statue. He knows that Mrs. Dalton is blind, but he is worried that Mary will alarm Mrs. Dalton that, Bigger is there. Mary starts to respond to her, so Bigger puts a pillow over her mouth. His action’s causes Mary’s accidental death.

Application:

What questions would you ask of Bigger?

My first and last question for Bigger would be. Why are you so horny all the time? Bigger was masterbating with his friend in the movie theatre. Why would you masterbate in a movie theatre. Also his plans to have sex with Mary didn’t go the way he wanted it to go. Right in the middle of his act, Mrs. Dalton came in. Then he ended up smothering her to death with a pillow. Something is seriously wrong with Bigger.

Analysis:

What do you see as other outcomes for Bigger?

I could see Bigger going to jail for killing Mary. Mrs. Dalton could have caught having sex with Mary, instead of preventing him of the opportunity. There are many possible outcomes that could take place. But this already has had an outcome.

Synthesis:

Can you see a possible solution to Bigger’s problems?

Bigger could go and talk to one of his friends about his troubles. Or maybe, Bigger could go and see a doctor, about why his hormones are so high. Also he could she a psychologist about all of his troubles. For example, him trying to get money, sexual problems, and also he killed a woman.

Evaluation:

Is there a better solution other than killing Mary?

I really don’t know what I would have done, in that predicament. I probably would have tried to escape from the home quietly. I not sure if I would have had put a pillow over her face. But I believe that I would really just run. I don’t what you could have done in this case. But my first option would to run.

Newspaper Article: Convincing Dr. D isn't so easy!!!

I know all of you remember this day like it was yesterday! January 17Th, 2008 a big brawl started in the school's IMC. People were suspended, taken out in hand cuffs, parent conferences were scheduled etc... After everything was resolved the school scheduled a 10Th grade trip to go to Baltimore. The permission slips were passed out on February 1st and the trip was on February 27Th. On the permission slip it said a student may not have more than 1 pink slip, no UN-excused lateness or absences and no outstanding funds owed to the school. It also said the principle makes all final decisions on who goes and who doesn't. Some of the people who were involved in the brawl paid for their trip and met all requirements to go so they were excited to go. On February 25Th, 2008 they were called to the principle's office and was told they were not permitted to go on the trip because of their participation in the big brawl that had happened. It got a little loud in their since all the kids were eager to go and the permission slip said after February 1st. Everyone was arguing their points why they should go but the principle was arguing why they shouldn't be able to go. Some of the student arguments was the permission slip, comparing other events and how they suffered their consequences already. The principles arguments was the permission slip, how big the fight was and how it took an major impact on our school. After all that arguing Dr. Davidson was mighty clear on his decision they was not allowed on the trip no matter what the student arguments was he made the final choice. He gave all the kids their money back and went on with his day. The students were furious. Since they was not able to go they started convincing their friends not to go. People had comments on Dr. Davidson's decision. Sophomore student Marquis White said "that's not right, that fight was in January and how is he going to tell them 2 days before the trip". Sophomore student Morgan Williams said " I think they had enough consequence why still punish them. It just is not right...Is everyone getting equal treatment because the way I look at it they are not". Sophomore student Charifa David said "That's not fair they paid already, their hopes were high then how he's just going to shoot it down, the fight was in January come on". All day the friends of the people were mad and were deciding not to go. Dr. Davidson was at a meeting so he was UN-aware of the way people felt about the situation. Later on that day last period. Dr. Davidson called the gentlemen back into his office apologizing about the earlier disagreement. He said he thought hard about it and he decided the gentlemen was in fact allowed on the trip. He said a lesson was learned from this " a decision that's not made to be changed is a bad decision overall". The students were glad Dr. Davidson changed his decision sophomore Demetrius Bernard said " I am so glad he changed his mind...I was about to get my money back". Sophomores Charifa David and Morgan Williams both said "I am so happy its great". I think this shows how this school is really a democracy. What school you know can change a principle's mind?

NHD reflection

Title: The Rise and Fall of the Philadelphia Black Mafia By: Charles Turner & Demetrius Bernard

This year for NHD I chose the black mafia. Going into this years NHD me and partner knew almost nothing only thing we did know they were black males and they were of Nation of Islam. We knew we would have to look deep into our sources to find a compromise.
We learned that the black mafia originated in North Philadelphia. We learned they murdered people for numerous reasons from not doing what was told to talking about someone of the Nation of Islam. We learned they not only murdered but they were so scary they got taxes from stores, they owned more than 60% of Philadelphia drug trade and they struck fear in the hearts of the citizens of Philadelphia. We learned they not only murdered people in Philadelphia but they would travel for an example they murdered a family in Washington, Dc. We learned the black Mafia had some compromise. They opened a school which still is opened, they opened barber shops, grocery stores and even community centers.
Our successes from this years project is that our documentary was the right length. It was divided into chapters so it would be easier to keep track. We had the right amount of sources and we conducted our time right. The best success of all is that we made it to CITIES!!!
Some challenges we faced was. We had to drop a group member not that we were deep into the project when it happened but it changed some things. It was very hard finding someone to interview since many people did not want to talk about the situation. Some suggestions I have for next year is that to pick the right partner. Pick someone you know will contribute and do work. Timing is everything. Do not make your documentary to long or too short because if too long it becomes boring but if too short you make your viewers want to know is that it.

NHD summary

For my NHD project this year I am working with Demetrius and Diante. We are doing the Philadelphia black mafia. So far we have about 15 sources. Some of our fellow students said they know people who were involved and they said they would try to get us an interview. We want to do an documentary because I believe I have this amazing outline for it. Some of the reasons why we have choose this topic was because it was very interesting and we knew that Philadelphia was really going through it then. We also choose this because we are going through something in our city now and plus we knew there was some good or compromise in it.
